WHAT MATH COURSES DO I NEED TO TAKE?
This is a question for your counselor, and the answer depends on your interests and your educational objective – Certificate, Associate Degree, transfer to 4-year school, personal improvement, etc. Specific information is available in the Sierra College Catalog, available at the Sierra College Bookstore, and your counselor can help you interpret the information in it. Some general information is as follows:
Some certificate programs have no math requirement; others, particularly in the science and technology areas, can have substantial requirements.
Some Associate Degree programs require only the completion of Elementary Algebra (Math A) or equivalent; others, particularly in the science and technology areas, have substantial requirements.
Transfer to a California State University requires, as a minimum, completion of one course that has Intermediate Algebra (Math D) as a prerequisite; transfer to a University of California requirements are somewhat more restrictive.
Liberal Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, Language, and Physical Science majors generally need meet only the minimum requirements. The most popular courses used to satisfied this requirement are College Algebra (Math 12), Statistics (Math 13), Finite Mathematics (Math 20), Precalculus (Math 29), Trigonometry* (Math 8*), or Problem Solving* (Math 10*). (*can be used only for transfer to CSUs)
Life Science majors generally will have to complete the Life Science Calculus (Math 16A/B) sequence, although some may have to complete a portion of the standard calculus sequence.
Physical Science majors generally will have to complete most or all of the standard calculus sequence (Math 30/31/32/33).
