Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL)
PLTL Workshops Available Spring 2002
How does PLTL work
Peer-Led Team Learning Workshop for Chemistry
The purpose of the Peer-Led Team Learning Workshop (PLTL) collaborative program
is to increase your chemistry prowess. This will be done by working on supplemental
material in the environment of a Math A support group. We have found in the
past that PLTL students not only improve their math skills but also their
communication skills and had fun doing it. From past statistics, PLTL students
are much more likely to persist in the class and complete it successfully.
This is not a drop-in tutoring program. If you are interested in one-on-one tutoring or a drop-in program, then you need to arrange for an individual tutor through the Learning Resource Center on campus (LRC).
The PLTL Workshop program is a semester long commitment of two hours per week outside of class. One of the objectives of the program is to foster a greater sense of community. Your study buddies need you to be there and if you are going to progress you need to be there! To encourage you to make a semester long commitment to this project, you may replace one of the lecture exams with PLTL workshop work according to the following criteria:
1. Attendance is required for two hours per week. You may miss one two-hour
session without
a penalty (or two one-hour sessions). Please remember to sign in at each workshop!
2. Supplemental materials will be supplied. Please
keep a notebook of the supplemental
problems you are working on. You will want to choose problems which extend
your skills
and fill your needs.
3. Your attendance determines the number of extra points you receive.
If you think the group is not functioning as well as it could be, please contact Jim Fisher (781-0482, X2482) as soon as possible so that we can devise strategies to rectify this.
If you cannot attend these sessions, but wish
to work collaboratively in a semester long commitment, you may do so. Form
a group of 4-6 people. Follow the criteria above and find a meeting time/date
and room (see me). You will work on the same supplemental sheets. See me each
week for the sheets.
PLTL is sponsered Sierra College.
