Tutor Position Descriptions

Tutor I

Under general supervision to perform responsible tasks requiring significant skills and some experience. This would include student help and temporary (short-term) employment in the following areas:

  1. Tutor students within qualified college disciplines.
  2. Assist students with content of courses for clarity of material.
  3. Explain material to students utilizing a variety of learning modalities.
  4. Confer with instructors regarding student progress.
  5. Review current course material so tutor maintains recency.
  6. Attend relevant workshops as designated by the Math Center supervisor.
  7. Tutor small groups (2-3) and/or drop-in tutoring for the Math Center.
  8. Develop tutor aids to assist students with subject understanding.
  9. Work as a private tutor in the non-college community.
  10. Provide study techniques and time management principles to students.
  11. Furnish referrals to campus resources and to appropriate staff as needed.

Tutor I must have: completed either Math 31 or Math 16B with an "A: or "B"; 2.5 GPA minimum; demonstrated proficiency in Reading, English, and/or Math, as per sierra College requirements for an AA/AS degree (if proficiency is by completion of a course, then the student must have achieved a "B" or better); additionally tutors must have completed SD 21A with a "C: or better, or can be concurrently enrolled.

Tutor II

In addition to duties and requirements of Tutor I, tutors must have completed SD 21B with a "B" or better and tutored at least one semester (if not at Sierra College, the student needs to provide verification from past tutor supervisor) and earned an "A" or "B" in one of the following courses: Math 13, Math 32, or Math 33.

Tutor III

In addition to the duties and requirements of Tutor II, tutors must have completed SD 21C with a "B" or better, tutored at least two semesters (if not at sierra College, the student needs to provide verification from past tutor supervisor), and earned an "A" or "B" in two of the following courses: Math 13, Math 32, or Math 33.
